On Wednesday January 15th people in Gaza were celebrating because there was news of a ceasefire agreement and a swap of hostages and prisoners between Hamas and Israel. This was to end more than a year of fighting. Palestinians of all ages went to the streets waving flags and saying “Allahu Akbar” They were just really happy because they thought the war was going to stop. They started celebrating even before the ceasefire was officially announced.
Social media was full of videos showing people celebrating in the streets. You could really see how bad the war had been and how relieved everyone was that it might be over. The pictures and videos online showed how much they wanted peace in Gaza.
The ceasefire and the prisoner swap were the result of talks between Hamas and Israel. Even though not all the details were out yet people were happy about peace. The war had really hurt the people of Gaza and they really wanted it to end. That’s why everyone was out celebrating. The announcement of the ceasefire was the first bit of hope for peace after a really long war.
