Karnataka Challenges Central Control Over University Leadership

Karnataka Challenges Central Control Over Universi

The Karnataka government doesn’t like the new rules the University Grants Commission wants to put in place for 2025. They sent a letter to the national education minister saying these rules take too much power away from the state. A big concern is how university leaders, like vice-chancellors, will be picked.

Right now, the state government has a say in choosing these leaders. They’re part of the group that decides who gets the job. But the new rules would get rid of the state’s role. Instead, someone appointed by the central government would choose the leaders for state universities. Karnataka sees this as the federal government taking control.

Karnataka thinks this isn’t fair and it goes against how the country is supposed to be run. They believe that the national government doesn’t always know what’s best for each state’s universities. The state wants the federal government to think again and let them have a say in how their universities are run, especially when it comes to choosing their leaders.
