Punjab Protests Block Emergency Film Release Over

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee or SGPC held protests in Punjab on Friday they went to movie theaters to stop the release of the movie “Emergency” the one where Kangana Ranaut plays Indira Gandhi. These protests happened all over the state and pretty much stopped the movie from being shown in most places the SGPC did this because they didn’t like what the movie was showing about a sensitive time in history.

The movie “Emergency” is about the 21 months when India had a state of emergency which happened from 1975 to 1977. The SGPC is protesting because of how the movie tells the story and how people might understand the things that happened back then the committee is a big group for Sikhs in India both religiously and politically they protested outside theaters to show they were against the movie and to stop people from seeing it in Punjab.

These protests did stop the movie from being shown in many places showing that the SGPC can get people together and change how a story is told. Because of the protests the movie wasn’t shown much in Punjab. It shows how organized groups can make a difference in what people see and how they can disagree with how history is presented in movies and other media.
