A 31 year old female postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9 2024. She was found in a seminar hall on the third floor of the hospital’s TB ward late at night where she was reported to be alone. After the crime former principal Dr Sandip Ghosh said it was irresponsible for her to be there alone which caused public debate about blaming victims.
The investigation went on for months and the trial finished by January 9 2025. A court in Sealdah has announced that the verdict will be given on January 18 at 2:30 p.m. The case has been closely watched with the victim’s parents involved and has raised questions about the safety and security of women especially in medical places.
This crime and the things the former principal said have created larger talks about responsibility and how often victims are blamed. The verdict will be very important in deciding how the case ends and if justice is given to the victim. It is still a key example of issues with safety for women in healthcare and violence against women in India overall.
