Tamil Nadu Legal Experts Slam “One Nation, One Election” Plan as Threat to State Autonomy

Tamil Nadu Legal Experts Slam One Nation One Elect

Kapil Sibal a top lawyer and S.Y. Quraishi who used to be in charge of elections both said they don’t like the idea of “One Nation One Election” at a meeting in Chennai. They think it would be bad for states making them less important and hurting their ability to do their own thing.

They said that having all elections at the same time would make national issues more important than state issues. This could mean state governments get less attention and their unique identities become less significant. They believe this plan would weaken how India is set up and might stop states from being heard properly.

This discussion happened on Saturday at a conference in Chennai. Sibal and Quraishi were there to share their worries about changing how elections are done. They think it would give more power to the national government hurting the ability of state governments to represent the people in their own areas.
