Post Graduate (PG) residents at the government-run MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, have not received their stipends for the past four months, causing financial hardship and raising concerns about patient care and worker morale. “The delay in stipend payment is causing immense financial strain,” said a resident on condition of anonymity, fearing repercussions. “Many of us come from outside Jamshedpur and depend on these stipends for rent, food, and other necessities. The uncertainty is impacting our focus and morale, which ultimately affects patient care.”
The residents have reportedly approached the hospital administration and the state health department on multiple occasions, but haven’t received any concrete assurance about the pending payments.
“We understand the financial constraints faced by the government, but timely payment of stipends is our right,” said another resident. “The delay is not only causing personal difficulties but also raising questions about the government’s commitment to healthcare workers.”
The non-payment of stipends has sparked concerns among patients as well. Some have expressed worries about the potential impact on the quality of care provided by demotivated residents.
“If doctors are facing financial difficulties, how can they give their full attention to patients?” questioned a patient attendant. “The government should address this issue immediately to ensure the well-being of both healthcare workers and patients.”
