The woman, who has not been identified, told the court that her husband’s poor personal hygiene had caused her significant emotional distress. She said that he would often go days without showering or brushing his teeth, and that his body odor was so strong that it was difficult to be around him.
The woman’s husband denied the allegations, but the court found in her favor. The judge ruled that the husband’s lack of personal hygiene constituted a form of domestic violence, and that the woman was entitled to a divorce.
The judge also ordered the husband to pay the woman 500,000 Turkish lira (approximately $27,000) in compensation for the emotional distress he had caused her.
