Hemant Soren’s ED remand extended by PMLA court for five more days

Ranchi: Hemant Soren, the former chief minister of Jharkhand, was placed under remand custody by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday for an extra five days. This was decided by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in New Delhi. This extension is a component of the ongoing investigation into possible money laundering connected to a land scam.

Hemant Soren, the former chief minister, was first detained by the ED for five days on remand, and that term ended on Wednesday. Under heavy security, the ED brought the former CM before the Ranchi civil court earlier in the day.

‘Hemant Soren Zindabad’ and ‘Jail Ka Darwaja Tootega, Hemant Bhaiya Chootega’ (‘Jail doors will be smashed, brother Hemant will be liberated’) were among the passionate protesters waving at Soren during his presence.

Hemant Soren was taken into custody on the evening of January 31 following a seven-hour questioning by the central agency in connection with the money laundering investigation. Concurrently, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha veteran Champai Soren took the oath of office as the state’s new chief minister.
