The incident happened in Mumbai at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. Information that is currently available indicates that ₹1.2 lakh worth of bathroom fixtures have disappeared from running rooms, public restrooms, and newly built AC restrooms. According to reports, the thefts happened on February 5 and 6. About seventy items, including pillar cocks, pipes, toilet seat covers, jet sprays, and bottle holders, were stolen during this period.
A Central Railway official stated that since only authorized personnel are allowed access to the running rooms, it appears likely that an insider is involved. Even contract laborers could be involved, the official said. The restrooms lack CCTV cameras, which makes identification difficult.
According to reports, each jet spray was worth ₹1600, so the total value of the stolen goods was ₹19,200. Six pillar cocks, worth ₹28,716 total, are also missing. It is noteworthy that on January 4th, the AC restrooms were made available to passengers.
