IIT-JEE aspirant died by suicide in Kota, fourth case in 2024

According to reports, an18-year-old student at a coaching centre in Kota, Rajasthan, committed suicide this morning in his PG room. He had been preparing for the Indian Institute of Technology’s Joint Entrance Examination.

A native of Jharkhand, the student went by the name Shubh Choudhary. He had been preparing for JEE-Mains in order to get into the best engineering schools in the nation, including the IITs. The previous two years he had spent in Kota. This incident represents the fourth reported suicide case this year involving a student enrolled in a Kota coaching centre.

When the results were announced, Shubh was shocked to see that his JEE Mains score was lower than he had expected. Then he headed back to his dorm room. His body was discovered this morning hanging from the room’s ceiling, according to reports.

Police are searching his room for any additional information or suicide notes. The authorities notified the student’s family, and an autopsy will be conducted once they reach Kota.

Already few others died by suicide previously this year

Moradabad native Mohammad Zaidi took his own life on January 23. The 18-year-old was enrolled in a Kota private coaching programme.

Niharika Solanki, an 18-year-old JEE aspirant, committed suicide in Kota on January 29.

On January 31, a B.Tech final-year student is reported to have also committed suicide. Noor Mohammed, a 27-year-old resident of Kota who was studying for a B.Tech at SRM University in Chennai, was originally from the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh.
