The interim government of Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since fleeing the country on August 5 amid widespread protests. The International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka has issued arrest warrants against Hasina and several of her former officials, accusing them of serious human rights violations.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain confirmed that a diplomatic note has been sent to India, seeking Hasina’s return for legal proceedings. Home Advisor Jahangir Alam noted that an existing extradition treaty could facilitate this process, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as Hasina continues to make statements from abroad that are raising tensions.
The request follows discussions between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Bangladeshi officials, where issues including attacks on minorities in Bangladesh were addressed. Hasina, in her recent statements, has criticized the interim government and its leader, Muhammad Yunus, alleging that the country is now under a “fascist regime.”
