Indian authorities are investigating a major human trafficking network that lured young men from poor villages with the promise of lucrative jobs in Russia. These men instead were forced to fight for the Russian military in the war against Ukraine. The operation preyed on vulnerable families. They targeted those desperate for a way out of poverty. The victims were promised roles as support staff in Russia, but after arriving their passports were seized and they were forced to train as soldiers.
The network is believed to operate across multiple Indian states. Recruitment agents are facing allegations of taking large sums of money from families and then sending their sons to Russia. There the men were tricked and placed into combat roles with limited training and equipment. A few men who managed to return home say they witnessed other young Indians killed on the frontlines.
Many of the families are now pleading with the Indian government to help get their children returned. Authorities are working to confirm more victims and identify the people who are responsible. They have arrested several agents in a country-wide crackdown on illegal human trafficking. They are collaborating with Russian officials to look into this issue and work towards getting these young men back home.
