An Aligarh activist filed a case saying the Jama Masjid was built on top of demolished Buddhist Jain and Hindu temples. Pandit Keshav Dev Gautam says responses to his Right to Information requests prove it. He claims one response shows the mosque was built on public land without permission from the government.
The activist wants the court to say the mosque’s management committee is illegal and wants the government to take the land. He got this idea from info he got using the RTI. The Civil Court is now taking on the case and will have a hearing on Feb 15, according to Gautam.
The Jama Masjid is in a Muslim area of the old city and historical records show it was built in the 1700s. This case comes when there are already other legal problems about religious sites in India.
