The Supreme Court in India decided not to take up a case about the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill from 2023. This bill wants to give women 33% of seats in the national parliament and state assemblies like the one in Delhi. Someone asked the court to make the government start using the law right away.
The judges said the case didn’t show that anyone’s basic rights were being broken. If you want the Supreme Court to directly hear a case it has to be about someone’s fundamental rights being violated. That’s how they decide when they should get involved. Because the case didn’t prove that the judges are not going to take action.
So the court’s decision means that right now they won’t force the government to use the 33% rule. The court didn’t say if the law itself was good or bad just that the case didn’t meet the legal needs to have it heard by the Supreme Court.
