Bangladesh Summons Indian Envoy Over Border Fence Dispute

Bangladesh Summons Indian Envoy Over Border Fence

On January 12th the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry called in the Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma. They wanted to talk about rising tension at the border. This happened because Bangladesh said India was trying to build fences in five different places along their shared border. Bangladesh believes this fence building goes against a deal they already have.

High Commissioner Verma showed up at the Ministry around 3:00 pm. He met with Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin for about 45 minutes. A news agency reported the meeting but the government didn’t say exactly what was talked about. Officials did confirm the meeting happened and that it was about the border problems.

The main problem is that Bangladesh thinks India is going against the rules about how to manage the border by building fences alone. We don’t know all the details of the deal or exactly where the fences are being built. But it’s clear Bangladesh felt India was breaking the agreement, which caused them to call in the High Commissioner.
