On Saturday January 11th officials in Ujjain India demolished about 250 houses and buildings in Nizamuddin Colony. This also included a mosque called Masjid Takiyat. They did this to make room for the Mahakal Temple Corridor Project which is meant to make the temple area bigger. The demolition covered around two and a half hectares and destroyed about 257 permanent structures.
The reason for the demolition was to clear land for the temple expansion project. The local government says they gave the people who lived there around 33 crore rupees before starting the demolition. This money was to help them move and rebuild. After giving the compensation they then went in and destroyed the homes and buildings.
This demolition caused many people to lose their homes and a religious building. The community was given some money for their losses. This shows how a big project to develop a city can take private land. The demolition happened to make way for the project which ended up displacing people and destroying the places they lived and worshiped.
