The Iranian Foreign Ministry said Mohammad Abedini got out of detention in Italy and came back to Iran on Sunday. Their spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, said they were happy he was released and thanked everyone who helped. The ministry didn’t say why Abedini was held in Italy or all the details about how he was freed but they mentioned it’s their job to look after Iranian citizens everywhere.
Abedini was arrested at Milan’s airport back on December 16th 2024. The news didn’t say what he was doing there or why he was taken. Baghaei also made it clear that the Foreign Ministry will keep working to help other Iranians in different countries. His words showed that the government was really involved in getting Abedini released. They didn’t give any info suggesting he did anything wrong only that he was detained when he arrived.
The news really focused on how pleased Iran was that Abedini was back. It showed they care about their people living outside of Iran. They didn’t explain exactly how they got him out legally or through diplomatic talks. They just showed that Iran was happy with the result and that it was an example of the Foreign Ministry doing its job to help Iranians abroad. The whole thing was seen as a win for Iran.
