India’s Ministry of External Affairs called in Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner on Monday January 13th in New Delhi to talk about some issues at the border. This happened right after Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry had called in the Indian High Commissioner the day before on Sunday. It seems there’s some tension building up.
The main problem is that Bangladesh is saying India is trying to build fences at five different spots along their shared border. They think this goes against a deal they have together. The details of the agreement and how the fencing breaks it are unclear but that’s where this whole disagreement started. The Bangladeshi government is worried that India is not respecting the current agreements because of this fencing plan.
So basically it started with Bangladesh calling in the Indian High Commissioner on Sunday and then India responded by calling in the Bangladeshi Deputy High Commissioner on Monday. This shows both sides are pretty serious about the border situation and the construction of the fencing. It’s a quick back and forth action within a short period of time meaning both governments are paying close attention to whats happening.
