India recently had a high level meeting with the Taliban in Dubai on January 8th. This is a big deal because it shows a change in how India’s handling the situation in Afghanistan. It’s a different approach than before and people in the region are watching closely.
The meeting happened because India wants to protect its own security in the region. Also India wants to have more influence as a leader in the area. They sent top diplomats to talk with the Taliban who are not recognized by many countries which has gotten some strong reactions. Pakistan in particular has concerns about this meeting.
This new approach shows India’s shifting to working directly with whoever is in charge in Afghanistan which is a big change. They are focused on security and their own goals in the region. By talking directly in a neutral place they’ve changed things but we don’t know yet what the long term effects will be.
