An Indian parliamentary group plans to call in people from Meta which owns Facebook and Instagram. This is because of something Mark Zuckerberg the head of Meta said on a podcast. He talked about how 2024 is a big election year around the world and mentioned some countries where the current government lost including India.
The committee thinks these comments are bad for India’s reputation and wants Meta to say sorry. The person in charge of the committee says Zuckerberg made India’s democracy look bad. They want to know why he said those things and what it means for people who use Meta products in India. We don’t know the exact day they’ll meet but it’s coming soon.
This action shows that there’s some disagreement between the Indian government and social media companies about sharing information especially around elections. The government is worried about how these companies might influence what people think about their politics. Asking for an apology means the government wants to be sure that social media doesn’t mess with how their elections are seen.
