The Delhi High Court will decide later if Tahir Hussain gets temporary bail. He wants to be out of jail so he can file papers and campaign for the election. He’s running for a seat in Mustafabad with a party called AIMIM. His lawyer, Rebecca John, spoke to the court about why he should be released for a bit.
Hussain says he needs to be out to do the things you have to do when you’re running for office. That includes putting your name on the ballot and getting people to vote for you. He says it’s important for democracy to let him take part in the election since he’s been nominated. He’s in jail because of what happened in the Delhi riots back in 2020.
Justice Neena Bansal Krishna is in charge of the case. The court listened to the arguments about whether he should get bail but didn’t decide right away. They said they’d think about it and let everyone know their decision later. The big question is how to balance letting people run for office with still having court cases against them.
