On January 12th, 2025 Bangladesh called in India’s High Commissioner Pranay Verma because they were really worried about what India’s Border Security Force was doing. Bangladesh said India is trying to build fences at five spots on the border and that goes against a deal they made before. Bangladesh thinks this is a big problem and could make things more tense between them.
This all started because India wants to make the border more secure by putting up fences something Bangladesh isn’t too happy about. India’s BSF hasn’t said anything directly about these specific claims but they both seem to see the rules about how to manage the border differently. Because of these disagreements both countries have been talking a lot and even called each other’s representatives to discuss it all showing that it’s a tricky relationship.
These border issues are happening while both countries are also trying to work together on other projects so it makes things even more complicated. It’s unclear why these apparent violations are taking place maybe they have different ideas about the agreements or maybe India just wants tighter control of its borders. It shows how easily little border disputes can become serious diplomatic problems. Both sides are still trying to figure it out through talks.
