Communal Riots Surge in India; Maharashtra Sees Highest Unrest in 2024

A recent study by the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism found that communal riots in India went up a lot in 2024. They looked at a bunch of Indian newspapers and counted 59 riots which is a big jump from the 32 reported in 2023. The newspapers they used for their count included the Indian Express Times of India The Hindu Sahafat and Inquilab.

The study showed that Maharashtra had the most riots with 12 reported. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar weren’t far behind with seven each. Sadly this violence led to 13 deaths. The study pointed out that Maharashtra is having a lot of problems in 2024 with both riots and mob violence. The study looked at where these riots were happening and how often they occurred.

The CSSS study mainly focused on the numbers based on what the news reported. While the study shows the increase in violence and lives lost it does not look into why these riots are happening or what political reasons might be behind them.
