3 on the Kolkata-Ranchi bus were robbed with ₹18L at gunpoint.

Ranchi: On Tuesday morning, four armed robbers stole Rs 18.5 lakh from the occupants of an interstate bus travelling from Kolkata to Ranchi. The event happened in the Ranchi district under the Dasham Fall police station on NH-33. Three more people were beaten by the criminals: the driver, his assistant, and a trader.

Three vegetable sellers who were returning to Ranchi after receiving their just compensation were robbed of cash by the crooks.

For the remaining thirty-five passengers, the miscreants did nothing. Technical assistance is being used in the investigation to gather information about the perpetrators, according to Rural SP Manish Toppo.

According to the police, the thieves began robbing the vendors in the Bundu area of the bus when it was moving from Babughat in Kolkata to Ranchi. Equipped with knives and handguns manufactured in the nation, they robbed the victims of their money. When one of the traders objected, a knife was used to stab him in the leg.

Following their theft of the cash, the robbers requested that the bus be stopped close to Nawadih, which is under the jurisdiction of the Dasham Falls police station. The driver and his assistant were attacked as well when they disobeyed. After getting off the bus, the thieves fled into the neighbouring woodland.

When the bus driver brought his car to the Bundu police station, he was informed that the crime scene was under the Dasham Falls police station’s jurisdiction. The police began relief efforts as soon as the bus was brought to the relevant police station.

Saudi Arabia raises the alarm about the Middle East: “Really worried that…”

Israel-Hamas War: “We’re incredibly concerned for regional security,” Saudi minister said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Saudi Arabia expressed its “deep concern” for the security of the Middle East in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict, citing fears that it may spread throughout the region. Prince Faisal Bin Farhan, the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, reaffirmed that a cease-fire in Gaza is necessary for a settlement to the war. He stated that international powers have to employ diplomacy to put a halt to the Houthi group’s attacks on ships in the Red Sea during the lull of hostilities.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, he declared, “We’re incredibly concerned for regional security,” adding that “freedom of navigation in the Red Sea impacts all of us.” Deescalation, both inside the Red Sea and throughout the region, ought to be the first priority, in our opinion. Making sure we interact with all stakeholders is a part of that.

Since mid-November, Houthi attacks have caused disruptions in the Red Sea. The Yemeni organisation has launched missiles and drones, attempting to capture vessels that it claims are supporting Hamas and the Palestinians. In an effort to halt Houthi attacks, the US and the UK fired missiles at targets in Yemen last week. However, the group supported by Iran declared that it would intensify its aggression until Israel leaves Gaza, striking a bulk carrier owned by Greece.

For over a year, Saudi Arabia has been attempting to negotiate a peace agreement with the Houthis. Countries have started to steer clear of the Red Sea more and more, even though none of their own ships have been targeted. This could result in further increases in the cost of goods worldwide.

Despite the fight against Hamas, Prince Faisal Bin Farhan stated that Saudi Arabia is prepared to formally recognise Israel if it moves towards a two-state solution.

He declared, “We agree that regional peace includes peace with Israel. Peace and security for Israel are intimately linked with peace and security for the Palestinians.” But a Palestinian state is the only way that can make it happen.

He cited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that the conflict must go on until Hamas is destroyed as evidence that Israel is not winning the fight and that a cease-fire in Gaza is therefore essential.

Mahua Moitra Responds to Center’s Eviction Notice, Warning Against “Use of Force”

Mahua Moitra Case: The action was taken more than a month after Mahua Moitra was dismissed from the Lok Sabha for unethical behaviour.

New Delhi: Mahua Moitra, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, is scheduled to appear before the Delhi High Court today to contest a notice that demands her to leave the government house she was given as an MP and threatens to “use force” if necessary, NDTV has learned from sources.

The leader of Trinamool, who was removed from office as a Lok Sabha MP last month due to unethical behaviour, would soon file a writ suit in the court of Justice Manmohan challenging the eviction notice.

According to Ms. Moitra’s solicitors, she is running for the Lok Sabha elections. From the final day of the Parliament session preceding a general election until the day of results, MPs are permitted to remain in their residences, they have stated. They have contended that since Ms. Moitra has been listed as a candidate, this ought to also apply to her.

The Centre has sent Ms. Moitra an eviction notice with severe language asking her to leave the cottage right away. The Directorate of Estates, which oversees government assets, has sent out a letter stating that Ms. Moitra and any other occupants “are liable to be evicted from the said premises, if need be, by the use of such force as may be necessary” if she does not leave on her own.

Ms. Moitra was “allowed sufficient opportunity,” according to the government’s notification, but she was unable to provide evidence that she is not an unauthorised occupant.

Ms. Moitra had previously filed an appeal with the top court. She was then instructed by the court to seek the Directorate of Estates for permission to temporarily occupy the bungalow. The court had observed that in certain extraordinary cases, regulations allowed authorities to grant a resident a six-month overstay in exchange for payment of specific fees.

However, the court let Ms. Moitra to withdraw her petition without commenting on the case’s merits.

According to the eviction order, Ms. Moitra will have to pay damages for each month if she chooses to contest the eviction notice in court.

Ms. Moitra lives in a home on Telegraph Lane in Delhi. Days after being removed from office as an MP, on December 11, Ms. Moitra received a letter from the Directorate of Estates asking her to leave the property by January 7.

Prior to this year’s Lok Sabha elections, Ms. Moitra had requested more time. She had claimed that her campaign will be hampered by the current loss of government housing.

In December, Ms. Moitra was dismissed from her position as a Lok Sabha member after a parliamentary panel found her guilty of unethical behaviour for taking lavish gifts from a businessman and giving him access to her Parliament login credentials.

  • IIM Calcutta fires Director over a sexual harassment accusation.

IIM Calcutta fires Director over a sexual harassment accusation.

With his dismissal as director, Sahadeb Sarkar became the third IIM director to do so in three years prior to his tenure ending.

Sahadeb Sarkar, the director-in-charge of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C), was fired after a sexual harassment allegation was made against him, the institute announced.

In a statement released late on Tuesday night, the institute stated that the charges against Sarkar are being looked into and that it took action against him based on the internal complaints committee’s (ICC) suggestion.

Professor Saibal Chattopadhyay, the next most senior faculty member, was named director-in-charge by the IIM-C with immediate effect.

“A written complaint under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act) against the former Director-in-Charge, professor Sahadeb Sarkar, has been received by the institute’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). The Board of Governors (BoG) has been informed by the ICC that the complaint appears to warrant a formal investigation, the institute said.

The action was done to guarantee “impartiality” in order to ensure that the investigation complies with natural justice standards.

“During the pendency of formal inquiry before the ICC and any proceedings arising therefrom or incidental thereto, professor Sahadeb Sarkar shall not continue in the office of Director-in-Charge and shall be removed from the said post and any other position wherein he has administrative charges at IIM Calcutta,” the statement reads. “The IIM-C Board of Governors held a special meeting on January 6, 2024, and accepted the recommendation of the ICC.”

With his dismissal, Sarkar becomes the third IIM director in three years to resign before his time is up.

Prior to this, in August 2023, Uttam Kumar Sarkar announced his resignation as director, having completed just two of his five-year tenure. In the fourth year of her tenure, then-director Anju Seth resigned in March 2021.

NEW DELHI: After his thrilling victory over World champion Ding Liren at the 2024 Tata Steel Chess tournament, chess prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa made headlines by taking the top rank among Indian players.
With the black pieces, the 18-year-old overcame the current champion and overtook the illustrious Viswanathan Anand to take the top spot in India.

Surprising himself with the result, Praggnanandhaa said, “I felt I equalised very easily, and then somehow things started to go wrong for him.” I believed it should be holdable even after I gained the pawn.”

“The first time winning against a world champion in classical chess feels good,” said the 5-year-old chess sensation, underscoring the importance of defeating a world champion.

At the age of twelve, Praggnanandhaa became the second-youngest Grandmaster in the world and the youngest in India in 2018. Acknowledged for his extraordinary abilities and accomplishments, he is the fifth-youngest Grandmaster to date.

Surprisingly, his older sister R Vaishali is also a Grandmaster, which makes them the first brother-sister GM team in history.

  • Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, consents to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on January 20.

Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, consents to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on January 20.

On Tuesday night, JMM central general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya threatened to confront the ED in a political manner, accusing it of serving as a political front for the BJP-led Centre.

Hemant Soren, the chief minister of Jharkhand, has consented to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at his official house on January 20.

His party, JMM, has expressed “huge resentment” towards the federal agency and accused it of serving as the BJP’s political front.

    Hemanth soren 2

On Tuesday night, JMM central general secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya threatened to confront the ED in a political manner, accusing it of serving as a political front for the BJP-led Centre.

“We have observed the ED’s persistent fabrication of a story in states run by opposition parties, i.e., parties other than the BJP. Our chief minister in Jharkhand is called in on August 14th, well aware of the constitutional head’s obligations on Independence Day. There have been numerous summonses in the New Year as well; the contents of the summonses are leaked by ED sources rather than being issued formally. We may deal with the ED as a political body since it is evident that it is functioning as the BJP’s political front, added Bhattacharya.

“ED sources told the media about cash seizures even after raids, but the official statement did not specify how much was taken from each individual. Since there appears to be strong tribal opposition to this plot to overthrow an elected government and because this opposition could turn violent at any time, we would like the ED to uphold its integrity,” stated Bhattacharya.

Congress working president Bandhu Tirkey made reference to tribal discontent at ED’s repeated summonses of Soren on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the ED has been invited to appear for questioning on January 20 afternoon, according to sources in the chief minister’s secretariat.

“Until January 19 (the last day), the CM will be occupied with the Women’s FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers 2024 at Ranchi. According to the source, this is the reason the ED was invited to be questioned in the afternoon of January 20 at the CM home.

Interestingly, following the eighth summons, Soren, the chairman of the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance government in Jharkhand, consented to questioning in connection with a purported land scam case. This message was delivered by special messenger to the ED headquarters in Ranchi on Monday afternoon.

According to sources, Soren received a letter from the ED on Saturday, giving him five days (16–20 January) to record his statement. The letter further requested that Soren notify the location and time of the recording within two days.

Additionally, he has been warned that the ED would contact him to record his statement if he fails to show up.

The chief minister has been requested by the ED to consider the letter received as a summons.

Interestingly, Soren had attacked the federal agency earlier this year in response to the ED’s seventh summons, calling its investigation into the chief minister’s involvement in a land fraud in Ranchi and the suspected money laundering allegations related to it “baseless and biassed.”

In addition, the letter hinted at filing a lawsuit against the summons and accused the ED of holding a media trial against him.

Soren hasn’t responded to any of the ED summonses thus yet. Citing the ED’s summonses as “unwarranted,” he had filed applications with the Supreme Court and the Jharkhand High Court requesting protection from the agency’s operations. His petitions were dismissed by both courts.

November 2022 was when he had last attended an ED summons.

Hemlal Murmu, a former MP and senior JMM leader, said that the ED was intimidating Jharkhand’s elected state government and disclosed that a bandh had been scheduled in the Sahibganj district on Wednesday in opposition to Soren’s repeated summonses.
