The Saudi embassy in Kabul has reopened, resuming full services after a three-year closure following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. The embassy announced the resumption of activities starting December 22nd, citing the kingdom’s desire to serve the Afghan people. The Afghan foreign ministry welcomed the move, expressing optimism about strengthening ties and addressing the needs of Afghan citizens in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia, which has historical ties with Afghanistan dating back to 1932, has launched various humanitarian projects through the King Salman Relief Centre. It has also actively participated in international efforts to establish security and stability in Afghanistan.
While the level of representation remains unclear, the resumption follows the reopening of consular services in November 2021 and continued aid through KS Relief, showing a step towards re-establishing full diplomatic ties after the Taliban’s return to power.
