On December 28th lots of people in Bawana Delhi India showed up to protest a new waste-to-energy plant even though it was cold and rainy. They were upset about the plan for this plant which would be built on 15 acres near a hazardous waste site. A company called M/s Jindal Urban Waste Management is going to build it to process around 3000 tonnes of waste every day and turn it into electricity.
People living there are worried that the plant will cause air pollution and make traffic much worse. They also don’t trust the government because they feel like they haven’t been told enough about the project and didn’t get a real chance to give their opinions. So the protest was their way to try and make the people in charge listen and stop the plant from being built.
Even though people don’t want it the plant is still moving forward with government approval. The company says they’ll use good technology to reduce pollution but many residents aren’t sure they believe that. This shows how communities can disagree with big projects about how to handle trash and what it means for their neighborhoods and that they want more communication with those in charge.
