The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority banned Wahed Invest’s poster campaign. People complained it was offensive. The posters showed burning US dollar and Euro banknotes with a message about a “money revolution” on London transport. 75 complaints came in.
Wahed Invest, a platform for Muslim investors, said the campaign was about inflation. They thought money was like “going up in flames” if your savings don’t keep up. They offer ethical investment without interest to be more fair. They figured everyone would get it was a symbol.
The ASA didn’t agree. They said burning money is really offensive. Lots of people on the transport network would see it, not just their target people. The ASA banned the campaign. Wahed can’t use those posters again.
