A Pakistani court found Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi guilty of corruption in the al-Qadir Trust case. Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict Friday after a few delays. Khan received a 14 year prison sentence and Bibi was given 7 years. The court met inside Adiala jail for the pronouncement.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) said Khan and others benefited illegally from a 190 million pound settlement from the UK. They say the money should have gone to the government but went to the al-Qadir Trust instead. NAB claims they messed with land deals related to the trust and used their positions to gain personally.
This conviction is a big moment for Khan’s legal problems. The case has gotten lots of attention and Khan’s supporters think it’s politically driven. This ruling happens during a time of political trouble in Pakistan making things even more complicated.
