Test Cricket Returns to Pakistan After 10Year Hiat

Test cricket made a long-awaited return to Pakistan on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. The first match began in Rawalpindi, with Pakistani bowler Mohammad Abbas facing Sri Lankan batsman Dimuth Karunaratne. This marked the end of a ten-year absence of international test cricket on Pakistani soil, a significant moment for the country’s cricket history.

The reason for this long break in international cricket stemmed from a terrible incident in April 2009. During this time, militants attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team’s bus near a stadium in Lahore. This attack caused international teams to stop playing in Pakistan for safety reasons. However, the safe return of the Sri Lankan team demonstrates a renewed trust in Pakistan’s ability to host international games again.

This return of Test cricket is more than just a game for Pakistani fans. It has huge implications for the country’s future in sports. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Executive Wasim Khan called it, “a great day for Pakistan.” Moreover, they hope that this series will encourage more international teams to play in Pakistan. Khan also noted, “We have worked really hard for this,” highlighting the immense effort involved in this achievement.
