Hemant Soren was arrested on Wednesday

Hemant Soren was actually detained by the central agency on Wednesday, January 31, following his interrogation regarding the money laundering probe related to the land scam case. On Thursday, February 1, he appeared in court and was placed under judicial custody for a single day. The JMM leader had accused the ED of orchestrating his arrest as part of a deliberate plot by the national government ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in a few months. Soren asked for his arrest to be ruled arbitrary, unreasonable, and a violation of his fundamental rights in his Supreme Court petition.

During Soren’s appearance before a special PMLA court in Ranchi on Thursday, February 1, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) asserted that the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand had unlawfully obtained 12 adjacent 8.5-acre land parcels in Ranchi. The 2023 raid against Bhanu Pratap Prasad, a sub-inspector of the state’s revenue department who had collaborated with the land mafia, is connected to the central agency’s investigation into Hemant Soren.
