They said that Priyanka Jaiswal, a PhD candidate in chemical engineering, hanged herself in her dorm room from the ceiling fan.

Additional DCP (West) Akash Patel told PTI over the phone that they were informed about a PhD student’s suicide at about 1 pm.

Upon arriving at the scene, police teams discovered that Jaiswal’s room door was locked from the inside. He continued, saying that Jaiswal’s roommates had alerted IIT-K authorities, who then contacted the police, about the woman’s body they discovered hanging from the ceiling fan after forcing open the door. Patel stated that a forensic team has been dispatched to the scene and that additional details about the suicide will be provided to the media.

Vikas Kumar Meena (31), an M.Tech second-year student at IIT Kanpur, is said to have hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his dorm room on January 11 after being “temporarily” denied the opportunity to continue with his studies. Pallavi Chilka, a 34-year-old postdoctoral researcher, committed suicide on December 19 by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her second-floor dorm room on campus. According to Patel, any explanation for Jaiswal’s suicide won’t be made public until after a preliminary investigation and other requirements have been satisfied.
