On Tuesday, January 16, the Tata Steel Zoological Park in Jamshedpur marked its 34th anniversary of founding. The zoo was officially opened on March 3, 1994, having its foundation stone placed on January 16, 1990.
350 toddlers and students from the government-run Rajendra Balika Madhya Vidyalaya Parsudih, the Tata Steel UISL-operated South Park School, the local NGO Anwesha, and Tarapore School in Jamshedpur attended the event’s inaugural ceremony.
There was a cake-cutting ceremony, and the zoo’s administration encouraged and welcomed these children and students to cut the cake. As partners, JACAPCPL officials were also present at the event. JACAPCPL is making a major contribution to the zoo’s advancement.
The celebration was followed by the opening of a 15-day programme for education on animal welfare, which includes talks by keeper talks, touch-and-learn sessions, and wildlife and conservation experts. Gift cards were given to the zoo staff as a token of appreciation and recognition for their work in overseeing the animals and the entire facility.
When the zoo was first established, its purpose was to give some pleasure and leisure to the Tata Steel Limited employees who put in eight hours a day of hard labour. However, in the modern world, the zoo’s significance has shifted, and it now serves as a hub for teaching and raising public awareness among Jamshedpur residents about pollution, climate change, environmental issues, and wildlife protection.
Tata Zoo is now executing a new master plan that focuses on substantial upgrades to the zoo, including building additional animal enclosures, a veterinary hospital and providing new attractions for visitors. The zoo is classified as a medium category zoo by the Central Zoo Authority.
