A resident of Chakradharpur, West Singhbhum, is seeking compensation for land used to build an electricity power grid. Shanti Nayak, from Manipur village, says the electricity department built the grid’s wall on her property without paying her for it. For five years, she has been trying to get paid for the 10 decimals of her land.
Jharkhand Urja Sancharan Nigam Limited took the land to construct the 132/33 KV power grid. Nayak says the electricity department took her “rayati land” when they built the boundary wall. Rayati land refers to land owned by a tenant who pays rent to the government. Although she has asked for compensation many times, she still has not received any money.
Nayak’s situation has put her and her family under financial strain. “I have been running from pillar to post for the compensation, but nothing has been done so far,” Nayak stated. She is frustrated that the authorities have not responded to her pleas. Moreover, the missing compensation has made it hard for her to support her family.
This case highlights the problems that landowners face when their land is taken for public projects. Shanti Nayakâs struggle shows how important it is to provide fair and timely compensation. Therefore, development projects should not place an unfair burden on individuals. To ensure fair treatment and uphold principles of equitable development, this issue needs immediate attention.
