Jharkhand News: From Jharkhand Chami Murmu and Purnima Mahato won Padma Shri award

The Padma Shri was given to 34 unsung heroes on the eve of the 75th Republic Day. Among them are tribal environmentalist Chami Murmu of Seraikela-Kharsawan and international archery coach Purnima Mahato of Birsanagar, Jamshedpur. While the other has dedicated his life to the preservation of nature, one of them has dedicated multiple archers to the nation.

A modest environmental protection initiative launched by a tribal woman approximately thirty years ago has had a significant influence on society as times have changed. His actions altered the state’s course and circumstances. He has been chosen to receive the nation’s highest honor, the Padmashree award, today.

In 1988, Murmu took an oath to safeguard forests.
The Padmashree Award will be given by the Central Government to Chami Murmu, a resident of Seraikela Kharsawan, Jharkhand, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to environmental protection. In a special interview with Local 18, Chami Murmu revealed that the villagers’ 1988 firewood shortage was caused by the forest mafia’s careless felling and smuggling of trees and plants. She and ten other women began advocating for environmental protection during a period when it was hard for people to eat even two meals a day.


Purnima Mahato: Awarded Padma Shri in the field of sports

Purnima Mahato is an archery coach from Jamshedpur. On August 29, 2013, Tata Archery Academy coach Purnima received the Dronacharya Award in appreciation of her accomplishments.

What is Padma Shri Award?

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in
three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are
given in various disciplines / fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and
engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for
distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The
awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which
are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March / April every year. For the year 2024, the
President has approved conferment of 132 Padma Awards including 2 duo cases (in a duo case,
the Award is counted as one) as per list below. The list comprises 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma
Bhushan and 110 Padma Shri Awards. 30 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 8
persons from the category of Foreigners / NRI / PIO / OCI and 9 Posthumous awardees.
