Jharkhand News: Land Dispute in Latehar; Principal claims tribal land as school property, controversy erupts

On February 6, construction work was being carried out on a piece of land near Chandwa High School. Upon receiving a complaint, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Jaishankar Pathak arrived at the spot and stopped the construction work.

The school principal claims the land as school property. He says that the ancestors of the claimants had verbally donated the land to the school. However, the land is registered in the name of Gondra Uraon and others, tribals of Alaudia village, Chandwa, with account 32 Plot 1353 Area 0.13 Acre.

On Tuesday, Rupesh Uraon, a descendant of Gondra, arrived at the said plot to carry out construction work. When the SDO was informed, he reached the spot and examined Rupesh Uraon’s documents, finding them to be in order. However, he ordered that no construction work be carried out until further orders.

Rupesh Uraon said that whenever he tries to carry out construction work on the land, other people inform the Anchal office that there is a public path on the land, following which the work is stopped.

The principal of the high school claims the land as school property. He says that Rupesh’s ancestors had verbally donated the land to the school. However, when asked to produce any documents related to the donation of the land, he is unable to do so.

Rupesh Uraon demands justice:

Rupesh Uraon says that he is not getting justice. He claims that attempts are being made to grab his ancestral land. He said that his land has been investigated several times. While one SDO issues a land ownership certificate in favor of Rupesh Uraon, another SDO is not willing to accept it.
