Supreme Court overturns Jharkhand High Court order for appointment of District Judges

The High Court’s ruling was overturned by a bench led by Supreme Court Justice Aniruddha Bose, who also issued an order directing the prompt appointment of District Judges to fill the nine open positions.

    Case history

The High Court began the process of selecting 22 District Judges in 2022. But the High Court later altered the appointment procedure, raising the bar for qualifying marks to 50%, among other things. In addition, the High Court suggested that applicants be appointed to 13 of the 22 positions on the merit list, leaving 9 spots unfilled.

A Supreme Court petition was submitted contesting the ruling of the High Court. The High Court has the authority to alter the rules in this regard, the Supreme Court noted. These adjustments, though, ought not to have been made after the appointment procedure had begun. The Court decided that any modifications to the regulations ought to have been made prior to the exam’s start.
