Ranchi: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has sought a detailed report on the Kanhar Dam project, following complaints of irregularities in the distribution of compensation to displaced persons.
The project, which is being built in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Uttar Pradesh, will submerge 21 villages and displace over 4,000 families.
The PMO has asked the three state governments to provide information on the following:
- The basis on which compensation was distributed
- The reasons why some people have not received compensation
- The plans for the villages that will be submerged
The PMO has also asked for a report on the allegations of fake documents being used to claim compensation.
The Kanhar Dam project has been in the works for over 40 years. It was originally approved in 1976, but construction was delayed due to a number of factors, including protests from displaced persons. The project is now scheduled to be completed in 2024.
Compensation irregularities
The PMO’s decision to seek a report on the Kanhar Dam project comes after complaints of irregularities in the distribution of compensation to displaced persons.
According to the complaints, some people who were not eligible for compensation have received it, while others who were eligible have not. There have also been allegations of fake documents being used to claim compensation.
The PMO has asked the three state governments to investigate these allegations and take action against those who are found to be responsible.
Impact of the project
The Kanhar Dam project is expected to have a significant impact on the environment and the lives of people in the area.
The dam will submerge 21 villages and displace over 4,000 families.
The project is also expected to have a negative impact on the environment, as it will lead to the loss of forest land and wildlife habitat.
The PMO has asked the three state governments to take steps to mitigate the impact of the project on the environment and the lives of people in the area.
