He had submitted three separate applications for the Padmashree award.

Chami Murmu is a member of the Rajnagar Block Part-16 Zilla Parishad in the Seraikela district. Sahayegi Mahila Sansthan was founded by Chami at Rajnagar’s Bagraisai. On 720 hectares of land, his organisation has so far planted 30 lakh seedlings. In 1996, Chami received the Indira Gandhi Vriksha Mitra Award for this plantation.
