According to the study, which was published in the journal PLOS One, India has a much higher prevalence of dementia than many other nations. Leading author of the study Dr. Prabhat Jha of the Centre for Global Health Research, New Delhi, described the results as a “wake-up call” for India.

Dementia is a general term for a group of illnesses that affect memory, thinking, and behavior. An Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia is most common.

According to the study, dementia prevalence is 9.5% in India and 6.5% in the UK. According to the study, India has a higher prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) at 19.6% than the UK, which has a prevalence of 14.5%.

MCI is a disorder that frequently occurs before dementia.

The results of this study are based on information gathered from more than 100,000 adults 60 years of age and older, in a nationally representative survey. The survey indicated that compared to urban areas, dementia and MCI were more common in rural areas.

The results, according to the study’s authors, underscore the urgency of taking immediate action to address India’s rising brain disorder burden.
