A book came out recently called “Muslims in India 1947-2024 – Fake Narratives versus Ground Realities” and it talks about something pretty specific. It looks at how few Muslim lawyers have become Advocates-on-Record or Senior Lawyers at the Supreme Court of India. These are really important legal jobs in the country.
To become an Advocate-on-Record you have to pass a super tough exam, probably one of the hardest in India. You also need to have practiced law for a while and worked under another Advocate-on-Record. Only these lawyers can represent clients directly at the Supreme Court which shows how valuable the position is. It’s like they control who gets to argue cases there.
The book basically says that there aren’t enough Muslim lawyers in these high-level roles. This makes them think there might be problems with how diverse and inclusive the Indian legal system is. By pointing this out the book is trying to fight what it calls false stories and show people what’s actually happening.
