Controversial Figure Rithambara Receives Padma Bhu

Sadhvi Rithambara, a figure known for her controversial speeches, has received the Padma Bhushan, a prestigious civilian award in India. This announcement has caused widespread discussion because of Rithambara’s past of delivering hate speech, including genocidal slogans directed at Muslims. She leads the Durga Vahini, the women’s group associated with the Hindu organization Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). The choice to honor her as one of this year’s 19 Padma Bhushan recipients has been met with disapproval.

Rithambara gained public attention in the late 1980s through her involvement with the VHP and the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. During this period, her speeches frequently targeted minority groups, particularly Muslims. According to an anonymous human rights activist, there is strong evidence documenting her calls for violence and discrimination. These inflammatory statements have been mentioned in numerous reports.

The Padma Awards are meant to recognize people for their outstanding contributions in different areas. However, Rithambara’s inclusion has raised questions about the selection process. Many people find it concerning that someone with a history of promoting hatred has been honored. Her past actions and rhetoric are well known, making the decision especially controversial to many groups. So far, the government has not spoken about the concerns surrounding this decision.
