CPI(M) Slams Budget as ‘Cruel Betrayal’, Fails to Address Demand Problems

Indian Party Slams Budget as Cruel Betrayal Fails

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) Politburo has voiced strong disapproval of the Union Budget proposal for 2025-26. The party has described the budget as a “cruel betrayal” of the common people. They believe it fails to fix the country’s main problem which is the lack of consumer demand. The party is particularly critical of the proposed increase in the minimum tax slab to ₹12 lakh from ₹7 lakh and the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried taxpayers. The CPI-M sees these changes as a move to benefit only a small group of high-income individuals.

In a statement released on Saturday, the CPI-M Politburo outlined their concerns with the budget. They stated that the proposal lacks any real plans to boost consumer demand, which is essential for the country’s economic improvement. Instead of policies that help everyone, the party believes the budget focuses on tax cuts for the wealthy. As a result, according to the CPI-M, this approach will not help create more jobs or provide relief for lower-income families. The party’s statement clearly pointed out that the budget has “not addressed the root cause of the demand problem.”

Furthermore, the party believes that the budget proposal will worsen the economic inequality that already exists. The tax breaks for higher earners stand in sharp contrast to the lack of support for people with lower incomes. The CPI-M feels the government is ignoring its duty to provide economic opportunities for all citizens, which could lead to social unrest. “This budget is aimed at making just a minor section with comparatively higher incomes happy,” the Politburo stated. Consequently, the CPI-M plans to continue criticizing the proposal and advocate for economic policies that are fair and beneficial to all.
