A recent report from the United Christian Forum (UCF) shows a worrying increase in attacks against Christians in India. In 2024, the organization documented 834 incidents, a sharp jump from just 127 reported in 2014. This significant rise indicates a growing problem that could threaten the safety and well-being of the Indian Christian community if the government does not take immediate action. The UCF believes the current trend suggests a dangerous escalation in violence.
The report points out that Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have become focal points for these violent incidents. These two states are seeing a high number of attacks, which include harassment, intimidation, physical assault, and destruction of property. According to the UCF, the increasing violence could potentially jeopardize the very survival of the Indian Christian community before the year 2050. This prediction emphasizes the urgent need for intervention to stop the growing intolerance and protect this religious minority.
Furthermore, the increase in attacks seems to coincide with a rise in Hindu nationalist speech. Critics have suggested this type of rhetoric is contributing to an environment where attacks on minorities, such as Christians, are more likely to happen. The UCF report is calling on political leaders to respond firmly and promptly to ensure the safety of all religious groups in India.
The UCF data also highlights the crucial need for the government to step in and enforce laws that protect religious freedom for everyone. India’s constitution guarantees this right for all citizens, yet the rise in attacks is suggesting the country is failing to uphold this guarantee for religious minorities. Unless there is swift and decisive action, the situation could worsen, putting the lives and livelihoods of Indian Christians at serious risk.
