The Indian rupee hit its lowest point ever against the US dollar on Monday which led to some strong words from opposition leaders. They blamed Prime Minister Modi’s government for what they called “incompetence” arguing the government’s policies caused the rupee to fall. They brought up old comments from when Modi criticized the previous government about the currency exchange rate.
The opposition is using the weak rupee to show what they see as bad economic management under Modi. They say the rupee has lost a lot of value since he took office especially when compared to when he criticized his predecessor on this same issue. Basically they’re saying he made promises to strengthen the currency but that hasn’t happened. They’re portraying themselves as better leaders who could do a better job with the economy.
Opposition leaders are also using social media to call out Modi’s previous statements on the exchange rate. This is meant to show what they see as hypocrisy and a lack of accountability. They’re trying to use this situation to get the public to think twice about the current government’s ability to manage the economy. They are making sure everyone is seeing and hearing their side of things.
