Mumbai Train Bombing Convicts Allege Biased Probe, Seek Release After 18 Years

Mumbai Train Bombing Convicts Allege Biased Probe

A lawyer named S. Muralidhar spoke in court Monday. He was representing two men, Muzzammil Shaikh and Zameer Shaikh, who were found guilty in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings. Muralidhar used to be a judge and now he says that the case against his clients was unfair. He thinks the police didn’t do a good job investigating and his clients have been in jail for 18 years because of it.

The lawyer claims that the investigation was messed up and because of this his clients got a life sentence in 2015. He said that the evidence they had wasn’t enough to prove his clients did anything wrong. The 2006 train bombing was a terrible attack with many bombs on Mumbai’s train system. Many people were hurt or killed. The lawyer says his clients are innocent and got caught up in a bad investigation.

Now the court is listening to Muzzammil Shaikh and Zameer Shaikh’s appeal. The lawyer is basically saying that the justice system needs to be really careful. He wants to show that sometimes people get wrongly jailed if investigations are not fair. It’s a reminder that it’s super important to make sure everyone gets a fair trial and that innocent people don’t spend a long time in jail without real evidence.
