A court in Sambhal India set a hearing for March 5 about the Shahi Jama Masjid a mosque from the Mughal era. Hindu groups say it was built on a Harihar temple site and Muslims say no way its true. The Muslim side brought up a Supreme Court order saying no new surveys of religious places until further notice to stop the ongoing survey of the mosque.
Things got really bad when the court ordered survey happened because some Hindu people asked for it and it caused violence November 24. Four people died and many got hurt including 29 police officers. Muslims say the mosque was never built on a temple and will show proof in court. The Supreme Court told the Sambhal court not to do any more orders about the survey and told the Uttar Pradesh government to keep things peaceful.
Now on March 5 both sides will show their proof. Hindu groups want to be done with their side of the story and Muslims brought the Supreme Court order to halt the survey. The court’s decision could be important for other similar cases. The situation is very tense right now after the recent fighting.
