Farmer Protest 2024 Live: Kisan Andolan prepares “Dilli Chalo”, Delhi and Noida on high alert

New Delhi: Prior to the farmers’ ‘Dilli Chalo’ / ‘Chalo Delhi’ protest, the Delhi Traffic Police has sent out a warning to the public. There will be detours at the Singhu Border (Delhi-Haryana), according to the police. One of the requirements they had set when they decided to end their agitation in 2021 was a law guaranteeing MSP for their product. Hundreds of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have called for a march on February 13 (Tuesday) to protest this demand. To prevent tomorrow’s massive farmers’ demonstration in Delhi, security has been stepped up around the borders with Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikri.

    Why are farmers protesting again?

Farmers in Noida and Greater Noida have been protesting since December 2023, calling for increased pay and developed plots in return for the land they previously had purchased from local development authorities. In support of these demands, the farmers’ groups called for a “kisan mahapanchayat” and a protest march to Parliament.

Delhi Borders are sealed, Over 1500 police officer deployed ahead of the Mega march

Already, border security barriers have been put in place to prevent farmers from entering the nation’s capital. Roads have been marked with nails so that, according to officials, if the farmers who are demonstrating try to drive into the city, their tyres would get punctured.

There would be between 1,000 and 1,500 Delhi Police officers stationed in each of these border regions. The number of soldiers and the deployment pattern, however, will vary depending on the circumstances in various regions, police sources informed NDTV.

This occurs concurrently with farmers getting their tractor-trolleys ready for the march. As they got ready to go towards Delhi, farmers in Rajpura staged a tractor march.

Today, the heads of farmer associations will be meeting with three federal ministers: junior Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda, junior Home Minister Nityanand Rai, and junior Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. On Thursday, the first round of meetings took place.

200 Farmer Unions with over a lakh farmers will protest against the Centre in Delhi

Over 200 farmer unions are scheduled to start the march tomorrow in favour of a number of demands, one of which is the passing of legislation securing a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

The farmers are also calling for the adoption of the recommendations made by the Swaminathan Commission, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, the cancellation of farm debt, the reversal of police charges, and “justice” for the victims of the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.

What does Congress has to Say?

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said “If Congress comes to power, it will issue a notification to withdraw the agricultural laws, the government has only ended the movement, they have not issued a notification”.

Death penalty to 8 Indian Veterans by Qatar court

Eight men and two others were taken into custody in August 2022 on unreported charges. They were placed under isolation. In their individual capacities, Captains Navtej Singh Gill, Saurabh Vasisht, Purnendu Tiwari, Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Sanjeev Gupta, Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Ragesh were employed by a private company, Dahra Global, to supervise the integration of Italian U212 stealth submarines into the Qatari Emiri Naval Force.

All eight of the men received the death penalty from a Qatari court in October of 2022. Reports state that they were accused of spying for Israel, though the charges against them have not been made public by Qatari authorities.

The events leading to the release of eight Navy veterans

The Qatari appellate court commuted their death sentence in December of last year to a term of imprisonment ranging from three to twenty-five years. At Dahra Global, Commander Tiwari was a senior leader and received the maximum sentence of 25 years. Of the eight men, four were sentenced to fifteen years in prison, two to ten, and Ragesh, the only sailor, to the most lenient three years.

Family members stated in December 2023 that they intended to file an appeal with the Court of Cassation, which is the highest court in Qatar, following the appellate court’s decision to commute their death sentence.

The legal team was given 60 days to file an appeal, according to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson who spoke with the media during the first week of January. Then, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters, “The legal team has now received a copy of the court order, which is confidential in nature. Additionally, the legal team has been granted sixty days to file an appeal with Qatar’s highest court, the Court of Cassation. We are in contact with the families and the legal team, and our team is working on this matter to determine the best course of action,” he had stated.

After that, family members had no idea how the government handled their kin’s release. Another family member stated, “We don’t know how this was made possible; we just know that the Emir has approved of their release.”

“The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for Dahra Global company who were detained in Qatar,” the MEA said in a statement following their release. “Of the eight, seven have gone back to India. We are grateful that the Emir of the State of Qatar made the decision to allow these citizens to be released and return home.”

Navy veterans on their return to India

Following their safe return to India, a Navy veteran coming from Qatar stated, “We are very happy that we are back in India. Without a doubt, we are grateful to PM Modi for his personal intervention, which made this possible. Additionally, it occurred as a result of the Indian government’s constant efforts.”

“We waited almost for 18 months to be back in India. We are extremely grateful to the PM. It wouldn’t have been possible without his personal intervention and his equation with Qatar. We are grateful to the Government of India from the bottom of our hearts for every effort that has been made and this day won’t have been possible without those efforts.”, said another veteran who returned to India.

Family informed by Indian govt after men boarded flights back home

The Indian government notified the relatives of the eight former Indian Navy officers who were taken into custody in 2022 over suspected espionage charges that they had been released and were returning home late on Sunday. Only Commander Purnendu Tiwari has not returned yet out of the eight. It’s unclear why Commander Tiwari hasn’t returned yet, despite the fact that he was released from prison with others. But Commander Tiwari is also anticipated to return to India shortly.

On Monday, all others arrived in New Delhi early. It has been discovered that the eight men have been released and will be able to live in freedom in India with their families.

One of the eight former Navy men’s family members said, “Our veterans are back.” We are incredibly appreciative of the Emir of Qatar’s consent to their release as well as the personal intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After they boarded their flights late last night, we were informed of their release and return trip home.”

How much money did parties at the state level receive?

When it comes to state-level parties, in 2021–2022 the Samajwadi Party was given ₹3.2 crores through ballot bonds. But in FY 2022–2023 the Samajwadi Party received no contribution from bonds. Ten times more money than the previous fiscal year, or ₹34 crores, was given to the state-level party TDP through electoral bonds in 2022–2023.

Based on available data, the BJP’s interest income for the preceding fiscal year was ₹237 crores, while for the 2021–22 fiscal year it was ₹135 crores. During the 2022–2023 election campaign, the BJP used aircraft and helicopters at a cost of ₹78.2 crores, which came from its total expenditure. Furthermore, the candidates received financial support amounting to ₹76.5 crores from the BJP.

The significance of this news lies in its depiction of the BJP’s increasing financial power in Indian politics. One major advantage the BJP has over other parties is its capacity to raise substantial sums of money through electoral bonds.

After stating that CAA will be implemented before 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Amit Shah claims that despite Muslims being provoked, the CAA cannot take away citizenship.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), according to home minister Amit Shah, is provoking the Muslim community. In addition to assuring the minority community that their citizenship would not be taken away, he declared that the CAA will be implemented prior to the Lok Sabha elections.

“Since the CAA is a national law, it surely will be reviewed. It will receive notification before the polls.” speaking at the ET Now-Global Business summit held in the nation’s capital, Shah stated that the polls will implement CAA and that there should be no confusion regarding it.

“The Congress administration pledged the CAA. Congress had promised the refugees that they would be welcomed in India and would be granted Indian citizenship throughout the country’s division and the persecution of minorities in those other countries.” Shah remarked, “They are now reversing course.”

“Minorities in our country, especially the Muslim community, are being provoked Since the Act makes no mention of taking away citizenship, CAA cannot take away someone’s citizenship. The purpose of CAA is to grant citizenship to refugees who were subjected to persecution in Pakistan and Bangladesh,” he continued.
