A Kashmir shawl trader was robbed and assaulted in the Kapurthala district of Punjab on January 18th. Mohammed Shafi Khawajah, who makes an annual journey from the Kupwara district to sell Kashmir shawls, was the target of the attack. The incident took place in the Sultanpur area, as Shafi traveled to Shahpur Andreta village for his business.
According to the Punjab police, three masked men on a motorcycle ambushed Shafi from behind. This surprise attack gave Shafi no chance to recognize his attackers. “They attacked me from behind and robbed me,” Shafi said, describing the incident. Sadly, the robbers not only stole his 47,000 rupees, but also physically harmed him. This violent encounter has sparked concern about the safety of merchants traveling in the area.
Police are now investigating the robbery and assault. Although no arrests have been made yet, authorities have stated they are actively working to find those responsible. This attack comes at a time when many Kashmir traders are in Punjab for their seasonal work, bringing handcrafted items to sell. Consequently, the incident underscores the risks these traders face and may discourage others from making similar business trips.
