Tuesday’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will be put on hold once more as Congressman Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to appear in Sultanpur’s civil court about a defamation lawsuit that a BJP leader filed against him, according to party general secretary Jairam Ramesh.
“Rahul Gandhi has been summoned to appear in the Sultanpur District Civil Court tomorrow, February 20, in relation to a defamation action that was brought on August 4, 2018, by a representative of the BJP. As a result, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will stop tomorrow morning and resume on February 20 at 2:00 PM from Fursatganj in Amethi, according to a post made by Ramesh on X.
“The programme is proceeding as planned today, with Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi speaking at a public meeting in Babuganj, Amethi, at 4 PM,” he continued.
BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a defamation lawsuit against Gandhi in 2018 after the latter was accused of making “objectionable” remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a news conference in Bengaluru. He was referring to remarks made by the Congressman that claimed the BJP was involved in a murder case when Amit Shah was the party president at the time.
In relation to a 2005 fake encounter case, Shah was cleared by a special CBI court in Mumbai four years before Gandhi’s confession. Shah was Gujarat’s Minister of State for the Home at the time.
