Sambhal 1978 riot

Uttar Pradesh government wants report on 1978 Sambhal riots

The Uttar Pradesh government asked for a report about the 1978 Sambhal riots after a BJP member said that Hindus were burned alive murdered and had their property stolen. This happened in a legislative council meeting. They want a new investigation and action taken against those responsible. The government wants the local police and district magistrate to give them a detailed report.

The government is not doing a new investigation yet they want info on five things about the case. The state government wants to review these points. This happened after a very old temple was found in Sambhal where many Hindu people were killed or forced to leave. There was also a crackdown on illegal electric connections recently in that area. This was near the place where many were killed and displaced.

The 1978 riots started because of religious problems and a rumor after a Hindu festival. 184 Hindus were killed and there was a two month curfew. Some people were killed really badly. One business owner was mutilated and also the 24 people he was hiding were killed. There was a court case against 48 suspects but all were released in 2010 because there wasn’t enough evidence. The court received criticism for this.
